The need for a Home network of some sort is becoming an accepted fact. The type, protocols and architecture of the network are less clear and as a result the market has not taken off like some people have forecasted. The consumer wants a simple, easy to use, broadband, and cheap. How to do this economically is not clear. there are several technologies for transmission including POF, PCS, GOF, Cat 5-6, powerline carrier or wireless.
In addition, there are several protocols including 1394, ethernet, USB, and ATM. A number of organizations, close to 20, have developed home standards! The report summarizes the different option facing a consumer and forecasts the size of the market which could be huge. the report concludes that no one technology, protocol or standard will prevail but a mixture of these technologies and protocols will exist in a home network.
